Short Glossary
- Society
- The independent membership body that governs, owns the rules and keeps the Studbook as its register.
- Studbook
- The Society's permanent register of horses, including their identity, parentage and registration status.
- Microchip
- An ISO 11784/11785 electronic transponder placed in the left side of the neck and read with a scanner.
- DNA Parentage Test
- A comparison of a horse's DNA with its recorded sire and dam, using hair roots or blood.
- UELN
- The Unique Equine Life Number: a 15-character international identifier. The Studbook's UELN code is in progress.
- Passport
- The lifetime document that links a horse to its identity, parentage, register and recorded history.
- Registers A, B And C
- Register A is Foundation, Register B is Main and Register C is Recorded. Entry depends on the evidence available for identity and parentage.
- Native Types
- Hausa, Bornu, Katsina, Sulebawa and Bhirum horses recorded through Register A without a claim of breed purity.
- Breed Society
- The organisation that owns a breed standard and its breed studbook. The Studbook keeps the Nigerian record.
- Inspector
- An independent person appointed to assess a horse against the published inspection rules.
